The Boussinesq systems model buoyancy-driven fluids such as atmospheric and oceanic flows and Rayleigh-Benard convection. The Boussinesq systems admit several physically relevant steady states including the hydrostatic balance and shear flows. This talk summarizes recent stability and large time behavior results on perturbations near these steady states. The hydrostatic balance stability results rigorously confirm that the buoyancy forcing can stabilize fluids, as observed in numerical simulations. The stability result for the Couette flow (from a joint work with W. Deng and P. Zhang) requires only vertical dissipation and reveals enhanced dissipation.
